Rosh Rebel rebrands to Rosh Reign
After performing for almost four years under the moniker Rosh Rebel, the up-and-coming reggae songstress now goes by Rosh Reign.
She attributed the change to her evolution in music and said that she's wanted to do it for more than a year.
"We grow. We evolve. I had the feeling in my gut that it was time to make the change. When I started my professional music journey, I was more on the reggae side of things and wore that name representing me standing firm in my beliefs, not being led astray by society's ways etc," she said. "Even though my beliefs remain the same, I had an enlightening thought that really, the word 'rebel' in its natural meaning, isn't the most accurate representation of me or the music I've truly wanted to make." She reasoned that the new name is a more accurate description of her.
"I am a queen. I am a victor. I am royalty. I am success. It's my time to shine, my time to conquer and prevail," she said. "It, in some way, represents me stepping away from just a local musical vibration and more into the international mainstream, calling on my voice with my Jamaican flavour of course."
SOMETHING AFROCENTRIC
Rosh Reign, whose given name is Roshauna Dennis, shared that while brainstorming for a new name, she wanted something Afrocentric but she was careful not to overthink.
"Other than wanting something that represented me accurately, I also really wanted to keep the double 'R' and if possible, some letters from the last part of the first moniker. So then it popped up and hearing it, I immediately knew this was it," she said. Rosh Reign believes that the new name makes it much easier for her to step into the international light.
"It's smooth. It's welcoming. It doesn't raise questions like the previous moniker probably did. My music is for everyone and so this new name is solidifying just that. I can be a part of any space now, for sure, without question," she said.
She reasoned that after meetings and discussions with her team, she will decide the best course of action as it concerns the usage of her former moniker on her previously released projects.
An EP to be released this year will be distributed under the new name. Her first single under her new name, Firm, was released on January 18. Her previous singles include Tomorrow and Run Come.
