Foota Hype wants Ishawna to change her style
Following the release of her collaboration with Vybz Kartel titled Porn Flick, Ishawna's ex-partner Foota Hype said it's time for her to wrap up the "raunchy" lyrics and go for content with "class".
"Oftentimes what I say about my babymother's music or stage presence are often taken away as 'Oh him bitter or badmind' which is not true. I'm just saying, music is like a game of chess - if you are going in one direction and you're not winning, you have to change the format of how you're playing the game. And obviously, she has been going the whole raunchy, naughty, overly X-rated route and we've seen the results and they are not good," Foota Hype told THE STAR.
"Suh for a change, there are a million other topics that you could sing about and still be relevant and still create a hit. Suh I'm just saying, for her success, go against the grid. Everybody used to yuh fi a sing slackness so go against the grid and make progress," he advised.
Porn Flick, which was officially released on YouTube last Friday, has already racked up close to 700,000 views, with over 36,000 likes and a variety of comments. Foota Hype was especially critical of specific lyrics which say " Mi ready fi di c** shot babes, aim fi mi face don't c** inna mi brains".
"Yuh know how much people wudda wish dem get Vybz Kartel fi do an intro pon a song? I think was a great opportunity for her that was fumbled. One intro can flop yuh song, enuh, and because of the repertoire of doing these things, it a follow yuh up. Suh di simplest evidence of slackness you give, a dat mek di people dem turn away," he opined, while praising the production of the single. He noted that her single Equal Rights garnered much attention but suggested that if it was truly massive, Ishawna should be getting numerous shows.
"But Equal Rights was just a frenzy and the fans are not loyal...and she need to change di people dem around her," he said. Foota Hype suggested that Ishawna's Brace It collaboration with international superstar Ed Sheeran did not garner a greater international standing "because of the bad flavour that comes with her character". He called on her to change that through her music and how she presents herself. Foota Hype further stated that many of Ishawna's songs are recorded with quality productions, but the impact of Equal Rights follows her like a ghost.
"Certain things weh yuh sing just nuh sit well. Suh why 10 years after you'd still be putting in the same ingredients in the food weh mek di restaurant empty?" he questioned.
"And what's most disappointing for me that a lot of people don't know is that, she can sing real music. She can sing R&B and clean, real music, fi real. She can write too, but she care not to because she waah duh di raunchy stuff dem and it's not worth it," Foota Hype said.
He came under heavy backlash recently after reviewing Porn Flick during his regular song reviews but quickly clarified that he was doing his "professional" duties and doesn't have any "ill will" against Ishawna.
"Mi a do mi work. The music speaks for itself and I have a reputation to represent in a true, real and respectful manner. Suh mi ago speak inna di manner addi music first. I was just reviewing the song suh if dem waah seh mi bitter, God guh wid dem," he said.
