Man punches babymother, walks free

A man accused of assaulting his babymother walked free from the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Charged with assault occasioning bodily harm is 23-year-old Kemoy Grant, who pleaded guilty to the offence.

The court heard that on the day in question, Grant and the female complainant had a dispute which rapidly became physical. It is alleged that Grant became enraged after learning that the complainant, who claimed she was pregnant, was not. So distraught was Grant, that he reportedly punched her.

"Me and her have a daughter," Grant began. "Then she stay so now and tell me say she pregnant and when mi check it out, she nuh pregnant."

Grant explained that he felt cheated and resorted to violence because he "send her a bag a money".

"Have you ever heard of a miscarriage?" asked Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey.

Subsequently, the sitting magistrate ordered the accused man to pay a fine of $10,000 or serve six months in prison. However, the complainant requested of the judge to drop all charges against her babyfather.

RM Pusey obliged, and a no order was made upon the complainant's request.
