NONE of the approximately 30,000 cases of canned Chunk Light Tuna, which have been recalled by Bumble Bee Foods in the United States, is on the market in Jamaica.

Massy Distribution, the official distributor of Bumble Bee products in the island, told The STAR yesterday that Jamaicans have no need to worry.

Health risks

The tuna products were recalled because of possible health risks due to contamination.

"The product that is being recalled in the United State is not on our shelves," Massy Group President and CEO, E. Gervase Warner told The STAR.

"We have gotten the letter from Bumble Bee Seafoods International that has stated no product was shipped to Jamaica from that batch. We don't have anything from what is the product that is of concern in the United States," he added.

Last week, Bumble Bee Foods, LLC announced that it was voluntarily recalling three specific UPC codes of canned Chunk Light Tuna. The company stated that the recalled batch distributed in the United States were as a result of a deviation in "the commercial sterilisation process" which the company stated "could lead to life-threatening illness if consumed".
