With lasting images of harrowing tumours that need immediate attention, Debbie-Ann Rose puts up a fight against her mother's worsening condition stemming from breast cancer.

It is a race against time to drum up much needed funds for six radiation treatments.

Debbie-Ann has taken to the streets in support of her mother, 61-year-old Verona 'Miss Winnie' Rose, originally from Luna in St Mary, who was diagnosed on February 1 of this year. "Since she was diagnosed, the doctor wanted her to do surgery because the area is so large," Debbie-Ann said. "If they don't do the chemo (chemotherapy), they will have complications after they do the surgery."

Being the caring daughter she is, Debbie-Ann has seemingly walked to the end of the earth in support of her mother, seeking donations. "So far, I have reached out to my family. Pertaining to the fundraising, it has not gone anywhere," she explained. "I've been on the streets and to various places like stores asking for donations. I created some saving pans and put her pictures on it to walk with on the streets to ask for contributions."

Debbie-Ann has even gone as far as to set up a GoFundMe account to pay for the expenses her mother is expected to incur over the coming months. GoFundMe is a fund-raising website used by individuals or groups to raise money for different initiatives. "Whatever I have accumulated so far, I have to use for blood tests, ultrasounds, and such," the distraught daughter told THE STAR.

Miss Winnie is described by her family as being a calm, humble individual in which "everyone in the community gravitates towards her because she is very helpful". She is also a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in her community. Debbie-Ann says that the treatment for radiation therapy is expected to start at approximately $1.9 million.

Breast cancer accounts for 29.4 per cent of all cancers in Jamaica with an incidence rate of 43.1 per 100,000. It is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Jamaican women over the age of 25.
