Murdered prisoner was jailed for cop's death

The prisoner who was found dead in the Black River police lock-up in St Elizabeth yesterday was being held for the murder of a policeman in the parish a little more than a month ago.
Police reported that Roshane Baker, 26, from Lacovia, St Elizabeth, and Golden Heights in Denham Town, Kingston 14, was found unconscious with what appeared to be stabbed wounds to his body. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The police said they were alerted to Baker’s cell, where he was found lying on the ground, unresponsive about 5:45 a.m.
Baker was charged with the May 9 murder of District Constable Lewis Robinson, 56, in Lacovia. Robinson, who worked at the Santa Cruz Police Station, was sitting in his Toyota Camry motor car about 2 a.m., when he was attacked and shot dead. His body was found with gunshot wounds to his head and chest and his licensed firearm was stolen. Baker had made a court appearance for the policeman’s murder and was remanded.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force’s communications officer, Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, yesterday acknowledged that the situation was not a ‘good look’. “It’s not a good look when any citizen die in police lock-up because we want persons to be held safe while in lock-ups. Whether he is a person alleged to be the killer of a policeman or just a regular citizen, it doesn’t look good,” Lindsay said. “We would have pretty much preferred it never happened especially under the circumstances where he happens to be the alleged killer of a policeman.”
The Inspectorate of the Constabulary and Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) are investigating the matter.
Police are still searching for another man in connection with Robinson’s killing. He is identified only as Bully Flex who frequents Tivoli Gardens, west Kingston.
