Jamaican fined for drug trafficking in Barbados

A Jamaican national was fined BBD$50,000 (J$3.2 million) or two years imprisonment when he appeared in court on Monday to answer to drugs charges following his arrest at the Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados on September 2.

According to www.barbadostoday.bb, Kenneth Shawn Myers, 32, arrived on the island on Friday, and having cleared immigration, he was stopped and interviewed by the police.

STAR Online gathered that he was then referred to customs where an examination of his suitcase revealed five packages of cannabis wrapped in brown tape concealed in a false compartment.

The drugs weighed 3.4 kilogrammes and has an estimated street value of BBD$27,200 (J$1.7 million).

Myers was charged with possession of cannabis, possession with intent to supply, trafficking and importation. 

When he appeared in the District B Magistrates' Court, he pleaded guilty. He was fined for the offence of importation, but reprimanded and discharged for the other offences.
