Hundreds of refugees evacuate French camp

Hundreds of refugees and migrants have evacuated a refugee camp in the northern French town of Calais, close to the French and British border, according to a report from the BBC.

The camp, also known as 'the jungle', housed thousands of migrants fleeing war in Syria and parts of east Africa.

It is said that more than 300,000 migrants made the perilous voyage across the Mediterranean this year with some 3,700 being reported missing or dead.

Due to its position, migrants flock Calais every year with hopes of making it across the border to Great Britain where they seek to start prosperous lives.

After evacuating the camps, the migrants were transported by buses to various asylum centres around France.
