SCQ : Munro narrowly beats St Jago to advance to finals

With the guidance of rising star quiz coach Kayodi Drake, Munro College continues its quest to win its sixth title in TVJ’s Schools’ Challenge Quiz (SCQ) after beating St Jago High School in an exciting semi-final match yesterday.
The match ended at 23 to 20 in favour of Munro.
Both schools came out of the opening challenge locked on seven points. Munro was aggressive in the speed challenge and opened up a narrow lead.
The Spanish Town-based St Jago High tried to rally in the buzzer challenge, and at one point, it seemed that they had done enough to secure the win as the final bell sounded with them leading 24 to 23.

Sacrifice

The coaches of Munro, however, made a few queries and the St Elizabeth-based institution emerged as the winners.
Having last won in 2003, Munro secured the service of Drake, who took Wolmer’s Boys’ School to the semi-finals in 2014 and his alma mater, St Jago, to the finals in 2015 and semi-finals in 2016.
Drake, who also won SCQ with St Jago as player in 2008, admitted before the match that if he were to lose in the semi-final, he would prefer it to be against his alma mater.
“I would be more comfortable losing to St Jago because I have worked with those boys and I know the sacrifice that they have been putting in over the years,” Drake told THE STAR.
St Jago showed significant improvement in the buzzer challenge after nearly losing to Campion College in the quarter-finals because of the poor performance with the buzzer.
“We played better with the buzzer this time, but it wasn’t enough,” coach Mark Clarke said. “We thought we had won, but the judges said that there was a mispronunciation in one of the answers. We thought it was pronounced properly, but the judges say that it was not.”
