Woman pleads guilty to extortion

One of the five alleged extortionists who were arrested and charged with participation in an extortion ring targeting businesses in the central Jamaica pleaded guilty when she appeared before the Manchester Parish Court yesterday.

She is 24-year-old Careba Salmon of a Mandeville address.

Salmon is believed to have served as an on-the-ground agent, contacting and photographing targeted businesses.

According to Superintendent Wayne Cameron, Salmon pleaded guilty on six counts of conspiracy to extort.

The court ordered that her fingerprint be taken and a social inquiry report be done.

She is to return to the Manchester Parish Court on April 21 for sentencing.

Meanwhile, the other four accused 64-year-old Sheila Smith of Free Town, Clarendon; 21-year-old Beko March also of Free Town; 21-year-old Keeno Powell; and 20-year-old Sandre Bogle, both of Top Hill, Manchester, who were charged with six counts of extortion and six counts of conspiracy to extort, were remanded when they appeared in the Manchester Parish Court last Friday.

They are to reappear in court on April 19.
