Neymar is King! ... Brazilian jerseys selling like hot bread

In 2014, when the World Cup was played in Brazil, 'Neymar' was the sixth most popular boys' name used to register babies in Jamaica.

Fast-forward to 2018, mere days before football's showpiece event kicks off in Russia, and the No. 10 jersey worn by the winger is the fastest-selling football shirt on the streets of downtown Kingston.

Vendors said persons have been willing to spend big on Neymar jerseys.

"Neymar a sell the most. All $4,000 people spend fi a tall-sleeve one. A nuh di original, but man willing fi spend dem big money fi it," one vendor told THE STAR.

Bookmakers have Argentina's Lionel Messi 7-1 to score the most goals in Russia. He is followed by Neymar at 10-1 and Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo at 12-1.

Mark Allen, who was also selling the in-demand jersey, said the Brazilian's shirt is the most sought-after jersey in the lead-up to the greatest show on earth.

"Neymar jersey a the most people want. Pon a normal day, mi sell 10. It a sell di most, then Messi. But the Messi one nah sell fast like the Neymar one," he told THE STAR.

Constantine Webb, who sells jerseys for between $2,000 and $3,000, said, "Brazil a di hottest thing. It can't stay pon di stall. As it come, it done."

With sales of 15 or more Brazil jerseys daily, Webb said, "Right now, if we did have some more Brazil jersey, we woulda sell more because them limited, suh mi would a swap the rest a country dem fi Brazil," he said.

Neymar, the world's most expensive player, scored four times in five matches in the last World Cup, and the 26-year-old offers a bigger threat in front of the goal this year than in 2014.

Casbert Smith, a downtown vendor, said he has run out of Brazil jerseys and has been having difficulties restocking them.

"Dem dun and mi can't get none, but mi have England, France, Germany," he told THE STAR.
