Babymother stabbed, beaten with hammer

A St James man who allegedly attacked and wounded his babymother will know his fate when he returns to the St James Parish Court for sentencing after pleading guilty to unlawful wounding and not guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm when he appeared in court, recently.

It is alleged that on December 16, 2014, the complainant was walking along Bevin Avenue when she saw Atkinson and pretended that she had not seen him.

Atkinson allegedly walked over to her and an argument developed and escalated into a fight.

During the brawl, the defendant allegedly used a hammer to hit the woman on her upper right arm and stabbed her in the back with a knife.

In court, the complainant told presiding judge Kacia Grant that she needed to have a surgical procedure on her mouth and had requested J$1million in compensation from the accused during a mediation session but later reduced that figure to J$700,000.

In response, Grant said that she would prefer a judgement entered in the Civil Court and advised her to speak with the clerk of court, who would give her instructions.

But defence attorney Martyn Thomas informed the judge that Atkinson would take a certain course to shorten court proceedings.

Atkinson subsequently pleaded guilty to the wounding charge, and a social enquiry report was ordered to assist in the sentencing process.

The wounding matter was subsequently set for sentencing on September 13 while the assault matter will be mentioned that same day for a trial date to be set.

Atkinson's bail was also extended.
