Hanover police seize first illegal firearm for 2019

January 08, 2019

The Hanover police have confirmed that no criminal charges will be laid against a man who was taken into custody in connection with the seizure of a home-made handgun and three live rounds of ammunition in Sandy Bay last Thursday.

Despite this, acting commanding officer in charge of crime for Hanover, Inspector Carl Brown, told the WESTERN STAR that this seizure is the first of many expected to come, as the police step up their drive to rid the parish of illegal weapons and gunmen.

He said the cops "will continue to be vigilant in our duties", and will carry out more "road policing".

According to reports from the Sandy Bay police, at approximately 3 a.m., a team of officers carried out an operation at a section of Church Lane in Sandy Bay.

During the operation the perimeter around a house occupied by the accused was searched, and the weapon and ammunition were found.

The accused was then arrested. However, the decision was eventually made not to charge him as the evidence against him was considered minimal.

The Hanover police have reported that in 2018, 16 illegal weapons and 121 assorted rounds of ammunition were seized throughout the parish.
