Linstead residents shocked by woman’s murder

The residents of Victoria in Linstead, St Catherine, are still in shock following the brutal slaying of one of their own on Sunday night.

Dead is 33-year-old small business owner Verona Slack, who was gunned down by unknown assailants shortly after she closed her shop and was heading home.

Reports from the Linstead police are that about 9:30 p.m., Slack was walking home when explosions were heard. The police were summoned, and on their arrival, Slack was found with a gunshot wound to the upper body. The scene was processed, and the body was removed to the morgue.

Hard-working individual

A relative of the woman told THE STAR that he is clueless as to why Slack was murdered

“It is painful. It’s hard to know that she just died like that. She is a girl that struggle to get where she was. She started from nothing to something,” he said, while describing Slack as a quiet and hard-working individual.

“Even if a robbery, them coulda take her things and spare her life. She work hard, and she have a child. Now that child is left without a mother.”

Among the persons taking Slack’s death very hard is her dad.

“Her father a find it really hard to cope. Is his likkle daughter, so it a mash him up really bad. Trudy was a good girl weh always a work, and all of that is evident because she was killed on her way home from her business place. I know its the last news that he (father) expects to hear because she no mix up or anything,” the relative said.

The usually quiet community of Linstead has recorded a number of murders in recent months. The police have linked the increase in violence to turf wars, robbery and extortion.
