There was nothing but gloom upon entering Corrine and Shanice Henry's home in Effortville, Clarendon.

The mother and daughter duo have fallen on hard times, and they have been unable to make ends meet since the passing of their breadwinner a few years ago. They are solely dependent on their neighbour, Emilyn Robinson, who offers them food and other necessities whenever she can.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Robinson said that she is seeking much-needed help for them.

"Corrine's husband has been the one who used to take care of the family, but when he died, everything changed. Corrine take it to heart, so now she suffer from nerves problem and is unable to talk. Shanice has fits (Epilepsy), so sometimes she all drop and hurt herself," she said.

Robinson said that after Corrine's husband died, her son-in-law took on the role of breadwinner. But that was short-lived, as he was killed.

"I give them food and other items as much as I can, but sometimes it's really hard because is just chickens I raise for a living. Things really hard on them, and they really need help. She have a big daughter, but she left the home. I really would want to see them get some help because they can't live like this. The yard itself is a health hazard," she said.

Corrine stared curiously at our news team, while her 23-year-old daughter was quick to state that she wanted clothes and food.

However, those are just a few of their needs, as they do not have a proper bathroom facility. Their only option is to use the makeshift bathroom at the side of the house, which harbours puddles of stagnant water that settled under a pile of rubbish. Their pit latrine is an accident waiting to happen, as parts of the board flooring has already began to crack.
