I will take care of him - Alleged father of baby found in pit vows to support child

Even though Horace Campbell is not sure if he is the father of the baby boy who was found in a pit latrine in Cox Piece, St Mary, last week, he said that he is willing to take care of him.

He told THE STAR that he and the mother dated for two years and they have a four-year-old son.

"I feel really bad about what has happened and I'm heartbroken. But if a even mine or a nuh mine, I want to take care of him," he said.

Campbell said that he was told about the pregnancy only days before the incident occurred.

"I don't know why she do that. She could have come to me and said something to me instead of do what she did because everybody know seh me cool like that," he said.

Almost in tears, he said that last Wednesday when the child was found, his sister called him to say she heard someone calling out for him in the community, but he was not close at that time.

"When mi deh pan wi way a come from Ochi me call her and she tell mi seh she have baby and mi a ask if she alright and thing. That time mi never know that she in the community," he said.

Third child

Campbell told THE STAR that he could not stomach looking in the pit at the child because all he was thinking about was welcoming his third child, and first son, into this world.

He said that when he found out about the pregnancy, he was willing to spend what he had to ensure that his baby was properly taken care of.

"A the Wednesday before holiday (Heroes' Day) she told me that she pregnant and me asked her how far along she deh and she seh the baby due November, and me ask her why she tek so long fi tell mi and if she sure a mine and she seh yes," he said.

He said he visited the child, who people are calling Baby Moses, in hospital; but he is yet to hold the child.

"I was looking forward to her calling me and I didn't hear anything from them until this incident took place. On one hand I am happy that the baby is here but I am saddened by the circumstances now," he said.
