Recently, the US released a travel advisory that cautioned tourists from visiting various violent areas in Jamaica because of security concerns.

Kingston, St Andrew, Clarendon and St James were the red flag parishes highlighted in the advisory. Moreover, US citizens were specifically advised to stay clear of downtown Kingston and surrounding areas.

But some tourists have seemingly decided that there is nothing to be afraid of.

Joan Puigcerver, 26, is a Colombian who is currently in Jamaica. When asked if he is taking heed of the warning, he let out a sharp 'No!'

He told THE STAR that he is already thinking about coming back after his current visit is over.

"I am here for two days, and, so far, I don't see any violence ... I don't see anything. Based on my experience in Trench Town so far, I would come back here in Jamaica. I would come back for sure. Before I come here, I researched where I can get to learn about reggae music, so I come here," he said.

Advice for tourists

Puigcerver has some advice for tourists who may want to visit Jamaica but are sceptical after seeing the warning.

"It's good ... I think it is a good place to visit. You don't need to be afraid. Just come and feel the good vibes ... the people here are smiling every time, they are nice and good. They are very close to the tourists and make us feel safe and welcomed. You can come here and enjoy it ... just that," he said.

The advisory also warned tourists against resisting any robbery attempts. They are advised to use caution when walking or driving, and to be alert and aware of their surroundings. Mariano Valdes, 24, who is also from Colombia, believes there's no need for that.

"This is my first time in Jamaica and I will definitely come again. I went to Trench Town in downtown for a tour and I love it. I did not have any problems. The people are nice and it is just a good experience," he said, adding that he will be returning, despite his poor English.

Terry Duchscher from Canada says the advisory has not influenced her view of Jamaica.

"I have been to Jamaica a few times and it is no different from Canada. There is crime everywhere ... you just have to be aware of your surroundings," she said.
