A man was shot and killed in a section of the Dunkirk community in east Kingston yesterday afternoon.

When THE STAR arrived on the scene, police were seen maintaining a significant presence.

A senior police officer on the scene said that about 4:47 p.m., the man was standing at his fence when hoodlums on a motorcycle sped down Wild Street and opened fire hitting him. The man was later rushed to the nearest hospital.

One resident told THE STAR that he was in his house when he heard about gunshots and screams from a neighbour.

"I heard gunshots and then neighbours across from me run come around and say 'him dead, him dead'. From the moment I hear the neighbour bawl out, that is when I know shots were really fired at someone," he said.

The East Kingston Police Division was under a state of public emergency from January 26 until April 25, following increased criminal activities, including gang conflicts and murders.
