St John’s Road rocked by two murders
Sections of St John's Road in Spanish Town, St Catherine, have been plunged into mourning following the murder of two residents and the injuring of two others in two incidents which occurred hours apart.
The deceased have been identified as Anthony Davis, 60, electrician, and Shernet Whyte, 36, labourer. In the first incident on Sunday, police report that Davis and another man were pounced upon by gunmen about 9:30 p.m. Both were taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where Davis succumbed to his injuries. The other man has been admitted in serious condition. In the second incident, police report that about 2 a.m. on Monday, Whyte was at home when gunmen entered her premises and fired shots hitting her and her common-law husband. Both were taken to hospital where Whyte succumbed to her injuries received and the man admitted. A police source told THE STAR that there is an ongoing feud in the community. Some residents have reportedly started to relocate following the latest flare-up.
Member of Parliament for South Central St Catherine, Dr Andrew Wheatley, said the community is tense as a result of the violence.
"I am confident that the police will catch up with the perpetrators of these heinous acts," Wheatley said. "There is no support for criminality and it must stop." The St Catherine North Police Division has recorded 45 murders since the start of 2022.
