Road safety highlighted at health fair
The St Catherine High School held its annual health fair and exposition last Friday on the institution's grounds on St John's Road in Spanish Town.
It was held under the theme 'Stepping in, building a better tomorrow' and saw students and visitors being exposed to health and dental care, along with displays from various organisations. Among the group was the Road Safety Unit, which saw students being lectured on safety practices while traversing the nation's thoroughfares. Statistician Jodi-Kaye Todd said that it was a rewarding experience to be educating students.
"The aim is to show these students that while using the road, they must be focused, as distractions such as using cellular phones can cause accidents," Todd said. "We also showed them safety items such as helmets. We implored them to remain focused and [be cautious of] alcohol, as it impairs the vision, which is a contributing factor to road accidents."
The event saw scores of residents from St John's Road and its environs taking time out to benefit from the services that were available.
"This is a good day for me, as I am getting so much information, especially on how to walk in single file, which I realise can save your life," Michelle Langley, a resident said.
Principal Marlon Campbell declared the activities as a meaningful gesture, which coincides with the school's 75th anniversary.
"What is happening here today is an outreach to have students, parents and members of the wider community join with us as family," Campbell said. "This institution is 75 years old, therefore its existence is entrenched within the community, so we welcome all."
The day's activities saw displays from the Department of Correctional Services, Jamaica Fire Brigade, The Bureau of Standards, and other groups.
