Miriam James smiled broadly on Sunday as her son was one of 47 children who benefited from a back-to-school donation of stationery, courtesy of former residents of Brunswick Avenue, Spanish Town, St Catherine.

"Bwoy, is three a dem mi have going back to school come September, so any assistance is greatly appreciated," James said.

The group is comprised of persons from the Brunswick community who now live in various parts of the United States of America. In addition to the stationery, the group also donated more than $200,000. The children got their packages and engaged in various forms of entertainment, including a bounce-a-bout.

"We lived here before and now being in the United States, we are able to assist," Tresia Jones-Green said. "There are many families challenged to provide the basic for their loved ones, therefore we are helping to send them back to class come September."

Councillor for the Angels Division in the St Catherine Municipal Corporation, Patricia Harris, endorsed the efforts of the Brunswick group. Councillor caretaker George Moodie said it was a very meaningful experience.

"As the principal of a primary school, I know the real challenges faced by parents and guardians. These gifts can help to secure the future of a budding politician, doctor, lawyer or business operator, so it is welcome," he said.

The Brunswick group has announced plans to continue with the project on an annual basis.
