Head of the Kingston Central Police Division, Superintendent Berrisford Williams, says yesterday's fatal shooting of an alleged robber and the injuring of another in downtown Kingston should serve as a warning to would-be lawbreakers.

"We are very active in the space and it will be in their best interest to stay away from people's business place and property because we are out to protect people's properties. You will be caught so don't even try it or any other form of criminal act," he said.

Yesterday's incident took place along Beckford Street, about 4 a.m., after the police were alerted that a case of break-in was in progress.

"The men fired at the police and the fire was returned after which the men were hit. They were taken to the hospital where the now deceased was pronounced dead and the other admitted under police guard," Williams said.

The senior cop said a firearm and a quantity of goods were recovered.

As the lawmen processed the scene, a vendor told the news team that criminals have been preying on business operators in the market district.

"Mi glad dis happen because a nuh Chinese or other wholesale owners alone feel it, enuh. All when di man dem collect from yuh a day time and you pack up and lock up you stall tight suh till breeze caah past, dem still find a way to go in dem. Sometimes you stand up an just see a man walk and take up yuh tings. Nuff time di truck dem a unload goods and di goods owner dem just have to watch man a move dem tings in plain sight and nuh say a word. Good job officers," the vendor said.
