Following a number of recent security concerns in their divisions, councillors a part of the St Catherine Municipal Corporation are calling for police protection.

The call was made at the corporation's monthly general meeting on Thursday.

"In light of recent incidents, we need security protection at our meetings, plus a need for members to be protected on the streets," said Sydney Rose, councillor for the Treadways division.

"We have seen where councillor Ainsley Parkins was shot and killed in his division, while he carried out the work that he sworn to. The councillors are going into several volatile areas and need to be protected."

He requested that Chairman Norman Scott intervene by way of a written request to the Commissioner of Police.

His sentiments were echoed by councillor Peter Abraham of the Bog Walk Division, who explained he was recently attacked and assaulted by a man at a church in his division.

The consensus that with the election in the air there is a pressing need for protection.
