Pregnant woman in smuggling case remains behind bars

The pregnant mother of one, who is accused of attempting to smuggle contraband into the lock-up at the Constant Spring Police Station last month, will have to spend two more nights at the South Camp Correctional Facility, before her fate is decided.

Corrina Clarke's continued detention comes as a bail application could not be heard in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court as Senior Parish Judge Lori-Anne Cole-Montaque was absent from the proceedings on Tuesday.

"I don't know what was operating on the court's mind at that time for her to be remanded so I cannot hear the bail application. I will set it [the matter] back before my sister judge," noted Senior Parish Judge Paula Blake-Powell as she presided over matters in Judge Cole-Montaque's absence.

"She was remanded in custody for further considerations to be made," the prosecutor informed Judge Blake-Powell.

Clarke is before the court for introducing prohibited items into a lock-up and unlawful possession property. It is alleged that on February 19, Clarke attended the Constant Spring Police Station with a meal for a detainee. Checks of the container revealed that two containers were sealed together and when further searched, two phones, Rizzla paper, tobacco and vegetable matter resembling ganja were found.

The court heard that the package was not for her babyfather, who is the accused in a murder case. She told the court that it was for another man in the same facility. Her babyfather is Ojo Russell, who was charged with the murder of paralegal Sandra Risden.

Clarke was remanded in custody until Thursday.
