Male breaks into car to take box lunch

March 15, 2024

A St Catherine man who pleaded guilty to stealing a box lunch from a woman's car while she parked in Old Harbour is to be sentenced in April.

John Douglas, 31, of Old Harbour, was charged with simple larceny but when he appeared before Parish Court Judge Desiree Alleyne on Wednesday, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of attempted simple larceny. His bail was extended to facilitate a social enquiry report to be completed by April 29, when he will be sentenced.

The court heard that about 6:40 p.m. on October 5, 2023, Douglas went into a shopping centre in Old Harbour. The complainant parked her vehicle and proceeded to purchase other items inside a nearby store. While inside, a business operator observed that the accused was removing items, including a cellular phone and a box lunch valued at $1,500 from the complainant's vehicle.

He was held and the police summoned. Douglas declared that he took the food because he was hungry. The police took him into custody and he was subsequently charged.
