Truck driver charged in fatal collision

Prosecutors at the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court were instructed by a parish judge to assess and complete their case file against a truck driver who caused a fatality in a motor vehicle accident in the Corporate Area earlier this month.

The instructions were given by presiding Judge Carlo Mason on Wednesday, after he offered bail to the accused, Kwesi Masters. He was brought before the court to be arraigned for causing death by dangerous driving. In a bail application, attorney-at-law Richard Lynch submitted that a motor vehicle collision involving Masters occurred on March 6 and that "while attempting to assist the victim, a crowd converged on the scene and Masters left and went to Duhaney Park Police Station, where he gave a statement".

"Your Honour, a crowd came on the scene and you just never know what would happen. He gave a statement and, although not a caution statement, it shows the level of cooperation," Lynch said of his client.

The attorney noted that, the following day, his client went to work and was called by investigators, who informed him of possible criminal charges being laid. Masters was subsequently taken into custody that day and charged. The Crown informed Judge Mason that they were not opposed to bail.

"Him leaving the scene is slightly a mark against him," said Judge Mason, before offering Masters $300,000 bail with a surety. As a condition of his bail, he is to report to the police once weekly and surrender his travel documents. A stop order was also imposed and the matter was adjourned until May 10 for mention.
