The anxiety surrounding the construction of the much-needed fire station in Ulster Spring,Trelawny, which has spanned several years, was recently broken with the start of preparatory work at the proposed site.

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie, who broke ground for the project in 2022, told THE STAR that the funding needed to start the project has been approved, and all is now in place to commence phase one of the project.

"J$42 million has been approved for work to begin the construction of a fire station in Ulster Spring," said McKenzie. "This first phase will include demolition and preparation of the site. It will also include the fencing of the property." Ulster Spring and the neighbouring communities of Alps, Sawyers, Albert Town, Warsop and Wait-A-Bit are renowned for bush and house fires. The nearest fire stations are in Falmouth, also in Trelawny, 22 miles away in one direction, and Christiana, in Manchester, 18 miles in the other direction.
