‘Hire persons with disabilities,’ says Abilities Foundation
Director of the Abilities Foundation (AF) Susan Hamilton is appealing to employers to consider hiring persons with disabilities for jobs.
This was following their graduation ceremony where the AF honoured 41 graduates across various vocational fields. The ceremony, marked by moments of pride and empowerment, shed light on a broader issue; the call for inclusion in the workforce.
"Today's graduation was not just a celebration of achievements, but a testament to the capabilities and potential of persons with disabilities," Hamilton remarked. "We have seen these graduates grow in confidence and skill, overcoming challenges to reach this pivotal moment." The graduates, who excelled in programmes in carpentry, beauty services, design and decor, housekeeping, and data operations, showcased the diverse talents nurtured at the Abilities Foundation. Labour Minister Perneal Charles Jr emphasised the importance of removing barriers for persons with disabilities.
"When we remove barriers, persons with disabilities shine," he said. "They are not seeking handouts, but rather, the opportunity to contribute and excel. Today's graduates exemplify this spirit, and their success is a testament to what can be achieved with the right support."
Charles told THE STAR that the Government is commited to inclusivity through initiatives like the 'I am Able' campaign, aimed at enhancing access and awareness.
"Our goal is clear - to integrate persons with disabilities into the workforce seamlessly, ensuring they have the support and accommodations necessary to thrive," he affirmed.
Hamilton highlighted the empathy and camaraderie displayed among the graduates.
"This group has shown remarkable empathy and support for one another," she said. "From blind students assisting autistic peers to those with learning disabilities offering help to physically challenged classmates, their unity is a testament to their strength."
She opined that employers are increasingly recognising the value of hiring persons with disabilities.
"If you hire them you'll have loyal employees, they are dedicated, punctual, and often exceed expectations when given the chance," she said.
"Inclusion is not just a concept, it is a reality we must embrace," Hamilton added. "These graduates have proven their abilities, and now it's up to all of us to ensure they have the opportunities they deserve."
