Rising TikTok star Bubbles Gillies unfazed by critics

It is almost impossible to scroll on TikTok and not come across a Rastafarian woman freestyling about sex, her 'nookie' or a man's private parts.

Bubbles Gillies' latest 'tune' C***y Nuffi Dead has gone viral and has contributed to her having close to a 100,000 followers. A farmer by profession, the Montegonian said she is on her way to becoming dancehall's hottest female.

"I love Lady Saw and Spice, eno. Lady Saw a bad artiste, mi nah lie. People always a tell mi say mi a bring back sex into dancehall music and dem like it. Mi a go make it big and get out of poverty," she said.

Her freestyles are explicit, unfiltered and raunchy, and her way of 'bigging' up men and their sexual parts has earned her a place in their hearts.

"Mi DM (direct messages) full up, man, because the man dem love how mi a big dem up. People wah take mi out, but mi nah go out with nobody. Mi like the support and love everytime though," she said.

"I am very straightforward and some people may not like how mi raw and so. Mi nuh 'fraid to talk about sex, but mi talk about it the right and proper way, where mi nah diss nobody. Mi content dem is for adults," she added.

Gillies, who said she is in her mid-40s, aspired to become a recording artiste when she was a child, but those dreams were placed on hold when she became a mother.

"So I went into farming. When COVID came in, I started to write some songs because the lockdown was going on. I keep telling myself say 'Bubbles, this is the only way you can make it out and get out of poverty,'" she said.

Hungry for financial freedom, Gillies said she began freestyling a few 'sex lines' on TikTok and the response was overwhelming. But she does have her critics.

"Mi never know say people can too old fi talk about sex or go into music. We are all getting older, and right now mi bruk and want a car to drive on the toll, so mi nuh pay dem any mind. A lot of who are saying me old have relatives who are older than me. I don't matter what people say, because people have to criticise yuh in life," she said.

"Mi together with mi partner 23 years and mi slack lyrics dem nuh bother him. Him know from day one say a so mi stay, and him support mi and love what mi doing. Mi children dem push mi, and dem wah mi buss. Dem say mi a struggle for years and dem want mi make it inna life," Gilles said.

Persons have also questioned her Rastafarian faith, stating that her behaviour is not reflective of it. But Gillies said sex is not taboo when done with the right person.

"I don't fool around meat and I am a peaceful woman. I just like to dress sexy and let the people dem know say no matter how old a woman is, yuh can put yourself together and look good," she said.

Though sometimes being compared to women such as Queenie and A'mari, Gillies said she is not just another social media influencer.

"Mi have both young and old people a follow mi. Mi will never tell a woman fi go have two man or fi go sell her body. My drama and lyrics is a different type a sumpn from dem. Mi nuh just do things 'bout sex. Mi versatile bad, and unno soon see some conscious songs and poems drop," she said.
