Elderly man fined for assaulting police in 2021

On Wednesday a 67-year-old man was fined a total of $37,500 in the St Catherine Parish Court for assaulting a cop during a traffic stop 4 years ago.

David Coore was charged on a 14-count indictment.

In court yesterday, 10 of the counts, including discharging a weapon within 40 feet of a public thoroughfare, were withdrawn by the prosecution and Coore pleaded guilty to four counts.

In explaining the withdrawal, the Clerk of Court declared that the Crown would be unable to mount a viable prosecution in the matter.

Coore pleaded guilty to careless driving and was fined $30,000, overtaking on the near side and was fined $5,000, failing to obey constable command and was fined $1,500 and using indecent language and was fined $1,000.

Attorneys-at-law King's Counsel Peter Champanie and Patrice Riley represented Coore.

The court was presented with a psychiatric report which revealed that Coore, who lost his wife, was under severe mental stress at the time.

"Your honour, his behaviour was out of character that day. He suffered in silence but is contrite in his action and with no criminal history needs your mercy," Champagnie said.

Coore's appearance arose from an incident on July 12, 2021 he was held by the police along the Mandela Highway overtaking on the near side.

He was stopped and became aggressive.

He was taken to the Ferry Police Station where he was slapped with a slew of charges.
