Young mother caught between lover and his wife

For more than a year, Clive* showered Mindy* with affection, financial support, and gifts, ensuring she wanted for nothing.

Mindy, then 18 years old, was his side piece. Clive was not very secretive about the affair. In fact, his common-law wife of 23-years, Bev, knew about it.

"At first, everything did good. Mi nah tell nuh lie. Him tek care a mi and mi never short a nothing. Anything mi want, him gi mi," Mindy shared.

However, her fairy-tale life came crashing down after she got pregnant. After telling Clive that she was with child, Mindy noticed a change in his behaviour towards her. Their phone calls became fewer and farther between, to the point that Clive seemed very distant. Confused, hurt and feeling abandoned, Mindy left the community to stay with a friend in another area. But as her pregnancy progressed, Mindy returned to the community in the final stages because she needed the support of her family.

"Mi never knew what to expect, because people knew wi did involve, and him woman did know, too, suh mi never wah nuh problem," Mindy explained.

She said that Bev was not pleased to see that she was pregnant.

"When him woman see mi belly, she gwane bad. She tell mi how mi need fi dash it weh, but mi decide fi have my baby. Then when she born, di woman start tell people how it couldn't be his, and how mi baby a 'jacket'," Mindy said.

Despite the tension, Clive has decided to support Mindy and the child in secret.

Still, he admitted he had doubts about the child's paternity.

"Mi and har never together, enuh," he told THE WEEKEND STAR. "Is just a likkle thing gwane. And true she did disappear fi so long, mi nuh sure if the baby is mine, because she could a gone to a next man," Clive added.

He admitted that he cares deeply for Mindy, and although he is willing to take a DNA test to determine the paternity of the child, Clive insists that no matter the results, he will continue to support the child.

"Whether she is mine or not, mi wi care fi that likkle girl. Suh, whatever mi can give har, mi going to give har, because we have a bond, and mi have a bond wid her mother, too. Mi nah guh have it and see dem guh hungry. Mi a nuh dem kind a man deh," said Clive.
