Cops hunt man seen breaking into car

Superintendent Mark Harris, commanding officer for the St Andrew Central Police Division, says a man captured on video breaking into a vehicle on Carnival Sunday has been on the police radar for nearly a decade.

"He is a person that does these types of things, we know it is who now. He wasn't wanted before but we are going to treat with it now," Harris told THE STAR.

"We suspect that he is involved in all types of criminal activities," he added.

Harris noted that while identifying the suspect took time, the man seen in the video is now being actively pursued by police.

"Him just surfaced back now and that is good for us. He has more than one address and these things. He is a big [person] and look like old man, so him will trick people. He is about 60. But we know it is who now and he is being tracked by the police and we will communicate with him shortly," Harris added.

In the video circulating on social media, the man is seen holding a screwdriver while the car alarm blares in the background.

In the meantime, Harris said there were additional reports of vehicle break-ins following Sunday's Carnival activities.

"Basically where large events are, it's likely that we have crimes committed there, especially breaking into cars. So it's not like a spike because we don't have large events every time. But when we have them, these are the reports that we get over the years, not spike but consistent," he explained.

Ahead of the Carnival weekend, the Jamaica Constabulary Force announced a zero-tolerance policy regarding unauthorised vehicles being used within the parade space. Motorcycles, ATVs and bicycles were barred from joining the parade. Performing stunts or any dangerous acts that could endanger the public was strictly prohibited.

Harris told THE STAR that enforcement actions were carried out during the event.

"Over 10 dirt, off-road bikes were seized on the road," he said.
