New skipper blames batting

Newly appointed captain John Campbell has blamed inconsistent batting for Jamaica Scorpions' below-par showing in the 2016 WICB First-Class League.

The Scorpions lost by eight wickets to Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in the seventh round of the WICB First-Class League at Sabina Park yesterday. Set a victory target of 175, the Red Force romped to victory, posting 178 for two after resuming on 113 for one.

Final scores: Jamaica Scorpions 225 and 155; Trinidad and Tobago Red Force 206 and 178 for two.

"In most of the matches we bat well one time, and we need to take a look at that," stated Campbell.

"We had a slight lead, but setting a target of 175 was just not good enough. I think that is where we fell short. Our batting in the second innings."

Leading the way for Red Force yesterday was outstanding opener, Evin Lewis, who followed up his first innings 87 with an accomplished 104. The left-handed Lewis, coming off a recent Bangladesh Premier League century, hit nine fours and a six. Shai Hope ended with 27 not out.

"The hope (yesterday) was to pick up some early wickets, and, see what would happen. But that didn't happen for us," cited Campbell.

Jamaica, with just three wins and four losses, are now out of the title race after losing to cellar-dwellers Leeward Islands Hurricanes by 82 runs the previous weekend.
