Stona still has big throw in him

Though he failed to throw farther than his record at the recently concluded Carifta Games in The Bahamas, St Jago High School discus thrower Roje Stona still believes that he will unleash a big throw this season that could catapult him to being among the best in the world in the event.

Stona threw 63.77m to retain his title, a little less than the record of 66.4 he made last year.

"I am still trying to get the national record, or the even the World Junior (World Under-20) record," Stona told STAR Sports.

The World Under-20 record stands at 70.13m.

Stona has been consistently throwing over 60m this season and was tipped to smash Traves Smikle's ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships mark, which stands at 66.88m. He only managed 63.07m at Champs this year to win the event.

"I am really happy with my performance (at the Carifta Games) because I am throwing consistently over 60m," Stona said.

Stona is currently ranked third on the IAAF Under-20 list of top competitors in the event this year.

After he competes at the World Under-20 Championships slated for Finland in July, he will be furthering his education overseas as several universities have shown interest in him.

"I haven't decided which school I will be going to yet, but we are looking at the University of Virginia, University of Alabama and the University of Arizona," Stona explained.
