Go Fund Kemoy: family launch GoFundMe account to assist Campbell

Yesterday, A GoFundMe account was set up to raise US$200,000 for Olympian Kemoy Campbell, who collapsed last weekend while competing at the Millrose Games and has been receiving treatment from the Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The money will assist in funding Campbell’s growing medical bill.

The 27-year-old is now awake and in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the mentioned hospital.

Up to press time, the GoFundMe account had raised a total of U$37,316 after 19 hours, with the largest contribution coming from an unidentified contributor who donated U$2,000 to the account.

Reebok also stepped in to assist the runner, after president, Matt O’Toole, issued a statement to Sports Illustrated on Tuesday stating that they will donate US$50,000 to assist with medical expenses.

“Kemoy is an important part of the Reebok family and we are so happy to hear that he is making great progress. As part of our family, we will stand behind him and support him in his recovery. We are making a contribution of $50,000 to help with his medical expenses,” he said.

A statement from his family said: “Kemoy is in stable condition. Thank you to everyone for your continued support. Kemoy is awake and talking. Please continue to keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Kemoy will continue to be monitored and recover at the hospital for the foreseeable time.

CHALLENGING TIME

“In order for Kemoy to continue receiving the best care and to offset mounting medical costs, we are asking for donations to help support him and his family during this challenging time. Any donation made to help Kemoy on his road to recovery is greatly appreciated. Kemoy and his family are very grateful for the overwhelming support and outreach. The Campbell family would also like to express their gratitude to the team of doctors at New York Presbyterian/ Columbia University Hospital and the quick response of The Armory’s on-site medical professionals and doctors who assisted Kemoy and for the outpouring of support from the track and field community,” the statement read.

Campbell competed in the 5,000 metres at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro. He finished 10th in the 5,000 meters at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London.
