Red-hot Cohen lights up daCosta Cup goalscoring

Denbigh High School talisman Dunsting Cohen is riding a purple patch thus far in this season's ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup, with the striker already leading the goalscoring charts with 11 goals in just two games.

The proficient striker hit nine goals past Porus High in their opening fixture and followed that with two goals against last year's finalists, Central High. It is a feat that has sent tongues wagging regarding the goalscoring record in the daCosta Cup, currently held by Brian Brown of Rusea's, who scored 38 goals in 2011.

For the young Cohen, the plethora of goals has cast focus on him, however, he concedes that Denbigh and himself are taking things one game at a time.

"There is no pressure on me to break the goalscoring record because right now, we are in a rebuilding phase, and we are just trying to get things right again," said Cohen.

The national youth player is, however, eyeing some consolation and hopes that his exploits can bear fruit, both personally and from Denbigh's perspective.

"It is my short-term goal from before the season started that I wanted to be the leading goalscorer in the competition, and I will try my best to achieve that," he said.

Cohen is already being compared to several strikers who scored proficiently in the past, such as Rusea's Brown, Khesanio Hall and Deshawn Brown of St Elizabeth Technical, Cordel Learmond of Glenmuir, Jourdaine Fletcher of Cornwall College, and Ashton Bennett of Garvey Maceo, who all scored well over 20 goals in different seasons.

With Cohen also getting senior experience at the Jamaica Premier League level with Vere United last season, the talisman already has some figures he wants to achieve at the end of the season.

"I want to score between 25 to 30 goals, and to be honest, the record is not on my mind right now. I want to score as many goals as I can," Cohen said.

Cohen and Denbigh will be in action again on Saturday when they host Old Harbour High.
