Jamaica claim 38th straight Carifta Games title

Jamaica ran rampant in their medal haul quest at the Kirani James Stadium in Grenada on yesterday's final day of the Carifta Games to claim their 38th straight title, with a total tally of 84 medals - 45 gold, 23 silver and 16 bronze.

Bahamas finished second with 35 medals, consisting of nine gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze as Trinidad and Tobago were third with 27 medals comprising four gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze.

Jamaica started the day with promise, as the Rasheda Samuels and Dejanae Bruce finished first and second, respectively, in the Under-20 girls' high jump final. Samuels won gold with a clearance of 1.78 metres while Bruce took silver with 1.76.

Jaeda Robinson secured a record for Jamaica in the Under-17 girls' triple jump as her gold-medal winning distance of 12.69 metres erased the mark of 12.61 set by Rochelle Farqharson in 2009. High jump gold medallist Zavien Bernard claimed another medal when she took bronze with 11.63.

Jamaica swept the sprint hurdles events, extending their dominance throughout the day.

In the Under-17 girls' 100 metres hurdles, Malayia Duncan led the way as she took gold in 13.63 seconds, while in the Under-20 girls' 100 metres hurdles, Habiba Harris and Briana Campbell finished first and second, with Harris recording a wind-assisted time of 12.93 seconds, which would eclipse the record set by Alexis James last year. The tailwind, however, exceeded the legal limit of +2.0 m/s. Campbell stopped the clock in 13.11 seconds.

Michael Dwyer took the Under-17 boys' 110 metres hurdles with a time of 13.81 seconds, while teammate Robert Miller finished third in 13.97. In the Under-20 boys' 110 metres hurdles, Shaquane Gordon and Daniel Beckford secured first and second in 13.15 seconds and 13.25, respectively.

In the 4x400 metres relays, Jamaica took gold in the girls' Under-17 in 3:41.84 minutes, while Under-17 boys' 400 metres record holder Nickecoy Bramwell, ran a blistering anchor leg to carry Jamaica to gold in the boys' Under-17 in 3:18.43.

It was a sizable gap between the Jamaicans and the rest of the pack in the Under-20 girls' 4x400 metres relay, as they took gold in 3:34.69 minutes, with the Under-20 boys completing the sweep in 3:10.58.
