Cop hospitalised after accidentally shooting himself
A routine afternoon at a government facility in St James took an alarming turn yesterday when a policeman accidentally shot himself while handling his service weapon, leaving him hospitalised with an injury to his finger.
The incident occurred at the Montego Bay Revenue Centre about 3:10 p.m. Reports indicate that while the district constable was handling his firearm, a round was negligently discharged, striking one of his fingers.
The injured officer was taken to the Fairview Medical Centre, where he received medical attention. Police sources say his condition is stable and the injury is not considered life-threatening.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) was notified of the incident, along with the Police Federation and the Jamaica Constabulary Force Welfare Unit.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances that led to the accidental discharge.
