daCosta Cup: Maldon seek ‘positive’ result in first second-round clash
Maldon High coach Dillan Thelwell has hailed his team for advancing from the group stage of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup for the first time and he says planning and good execution will ensure a positive result in today's second-round opening game against Brown's Town High at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay. Kick-off time is 2 p.m.
Both schools finished second in their zones and will be facing each other for the first time.
They are in Group 4 with Munro College and Alphansus Davis High.
"It (reaching the second round) is a big accomplishment for us as a family. It is a great achievement for the Maroon Town and Maldon communities and all the other communities that have been supporting the boys. The school is very proud, and their spirits have been lifted for the last 72 hours," Thelwell said.
"I don't know much about our opponents. I tried doing some background checks but we did not find anything. We expect to go out there and work hard," Thewell said.
Meanwhile, Tyrone Codner, the coach of Brown's Town High, said some players are suffering from the flu so not a lot of work has been done ahead of the match.
"We were more focused on having the players recover from the flu," he said. He also said they were trying to find as much as they can about their opponents ahead of the match.
Like Thelwell, Codner is also doing some research on his opponents' style of play.
"I have been looking at a few clippings of the Maldon team, and, of course, our boys will just go out there and do what they have been doing. That is to score goals and seek to win the game. We are definitely looking to win but we know it won't be easy," Codner stated.
"The boys are going out there to give it their best effort. Once they do that, whatever the outcome, personally I will be satisfied," Codner added.
Brown's Town have never advanced past the second round. Munro College are the overwhelming favourites to advance to the next round from the group.
