Arnett score stunning win over Tivoli in eight-goal thriller - Cavalier’s Calvin aims to continue scoring form and lead team to title
Arnett Gardens FC registered a stunning comeback to defeat archrivals Tivoli Gardens FC 5-3 in a Jamaica Premier League football goalfest at Stadium East last night.
The match lived up to its feature-game billing with bold and exciting attacking play from start to finish.
Striker Warner Brown (71st minute, 72nd, 78th) emerged the star, the Arnett frontman netting a hat-trick that catapulted him to the top of the goalscoring charts on 13 goals.
"I told my teammates to fight and give it their all," commented Brown who certainly gave it all he could.
With Nichalia Fuller opening the scoring at the 25th minute with a spectacular left-footed strike, Tivoli Gardens twice led the encounter, having been pegged back at 1-1 through Joel Jones' 28th minute goal.
But when Roshawn Oldfield (36th) and Tkiven Garnett (47th) scored, Tivoli Gardens looked set for victory when they established a two-goal cushion at 3-1 by the midway point.
However, Arnett came out on fire in the second half and their strike force of Brown, Kimani Arbouine and Fabian Reid (90+4) who closed out the scoring, led their team's streaking raids to which Tivoli had no answer, prompting their experienced coach Jerome Waite to label their defending as "the worst he has seen in the Premier League".
Arnett moved into second on 45 points, one ahead of Montego Bay United and seven less than leaders Mount Pleasant Football Academy. Tivoli stayed eighth on 27 points.
CALVIN'S 12TH GOAL
Meanwhile, Jalmaro Calvin's 12th goal of the season carried Cavalier Soccer Club to a 2-1 win over Vere Phoenix in yesterday's opening match.
Calvin opened the scoring after only eight minutes and although Kevaun Atkinson levelled the match after 21 minutes, Shaquille Stein found the winner just before the hour mark.
The 21-year-old Calvin, who switched allegiance from Antigua and Barbuda to the Reggae Boyz in recent weeks, finished with 12 JPL goals last term and after matching that number in yesterday's game, the winger revealed he has his sights set on the top scorer award for this season.
"I hope to continue this consistency. The Golden Boot is on my mind but my main aim is to help my team retain the title again. That would be a big achievement. But of course I would love to continue to score goals and earn the Golden Boot Award. That would also be a good achievement," he told STAR Sports.
It had been five matches since Cavalier tasted victory and the forward is hoping the team can continue picking up three points.
"It was a fairly good performance, not only for me but the team. We didn't win any match for four games, so this is a good win for us and we hope we can get back on a winning streak. But it was a really good performance from the team," he said.
"In our last few games, we failed to control the games after gaining the lead. But it's something we are working on," he continued.
PROUD MOMENT
Calvin was recently named in a 28-man squad by head coach Stephen McClaren and the striker says getting his first Reggae Boyz call up was a 'proud' moment for him and his family.
"It is a proud moment to play for the country where you were born and grew up. Obviously, I spent some time in Antigua and I played for the U20s. But coming home back to Jamaica is a proud moment.
"My whole family is proud and looking to come and support me at the match. It's just a proud moment. I will go out and play for the country with pride and hope for the best," he said.
Cavalier coach Rudolph Speid is also happy to have the winger in his ranks.
"We picked him up about three years ago. What was important was how he attacked. He is really a quality player who has gotten better and better over the last year. He is durable, fast, always a threat and we are just glad we have him in our ranks," Speid said.
"He went there (Antigua) and they put him to play left back and I think that was the reason he switched allegiance, and we are happy to have in Jamaica," he commented.
Cavalier stayed in fifth place on 37 points with the win. Vere stayed in the relegation zone on 17 points, three more than last-place Humble Lion at 14th, and two less than Harbour View in 12th.
