Hydel girls lead Jamaica charge at East Coast International

May 02, 2025

BALTIMORE, Maryland:

It has been a roller coaster of a track and field season so far for the Hydel High School's girls team. And following their record-breaking performance in the 4x400m at last weekend's Penn Relays in Philadelphia, they'll be hoping to end their season in fine style when they compete at the East Coast International Showcase meet tomorrow.

This will be the fourth staging of the meet, which will feature over 1,200 athletes and takes place at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, starting at 9 a.m. Jamaica time. It will be a new venue, as the previous three stagings were held at the PG Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland.

Hydel will be one of four high school teams from Jamaica in attendance, joined by athletes from Excelsior, Holmwood Technical and Denbigh.

Leading the charge for Hydel will be sprinters Jody Ann Daley and quarter-miler Abigail Campbell, key members of the record-breaking 4x400m relay team in Philadelphia.

Campbell, the ISSA Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships Class One 400m winner, went on to clock a personal best of 52.17 seconds a week later at the Grand Slam meet. She will take on Sophie Rambo of Grassfield High (52.47 SB) and Sydney Sutton of Bullis High (52.75), her Hydel teammate Nastassia Fletcher, the Champs Class Two champion who has also dipped under 53 seconds this season, and Abrina Wright of Holmwood Technical, the Class One silver medallist at Champs.

The outstanding Daley, who ran the anchor leg on the record-breaking 4x400m at Penn Relays and also won both the Class One 100m hurdles and 200m at Champs, surprising Lacovia's Sabrina Dockery in the latter, will contest the 200m.

She will face Elise Cooper of McDonough High School, who has clocked 22.71 this season. Fellow Hydel athletes Sashana Johnson and Shemonique Hazle will also run the half-lap event.

Excelsior High's Kishawn Hoffman, the surprise winner of the Class One 400m hurdles at the ISSA Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships, will lead the male charge for Jamaica in the event. He will be joined by Champs Class Two finalist Kingsley Hanson of Denbigh High.

After his outstanding 400m relay split of 43.99 for Bullis High at Penn Relays, Olympian Quincy Wilson will lead the boys' 400m charge. Wilson also has an individual season best of 45.27s.

Omarie Williamson of Holmwood Technical, with a season best of 46.66, will lead the Jamaican challenge in this event, joined by Chanton Whyte of Denbigh High, the Class Two bronze medallist at Champs, and Demarco Bennett of Excelsior High.

Jamaican athletes will also be well represented in the 100m, led by Malike Nugent of Excelsior with a personal best of 10.35. His teammate Riquelme Reid (10.41) and Jaydon Collins of Holmwood Technical (10.59) will also compete.
