Excelsior High hurdlers dominate at GC Foster

EXCELSIOR High School's intermediate hurdlers Jaeden Campbell and Kishawn Hoffman stole the spotlight at the Central Hurdles, Field Events and Relays at G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport on Saturday.

Campbell set the stage for the Mountain View Avenue-based institution, capturing the boys' Class Two 400 metres hurdles in 53.43 seconds ahead of Jhabarie Whyte of Vere Technical, who was second in 57.12, with third going to Quwayne Brown of Excelsior in 58.10.

There was a quinella in Class One for Excelsior, as Hoffman clocked 53.43 for the win ahead of Demarco Bennett, who clocked 54.87. Third went to Raheem McKenzie of Clarendon College in 55.99.

Excelsior also captured the boys' Class One 4x100m relay, in 41.12, and the Class Two equivalent in 43.19.

Clarendon College won the Class Three 4x100m in 47.33.

GOOD RESULTS

St Jago and William Knibb also had good results among the male athletes. St Jago started the day with a win in the Open boys' 2000m steeplechase, as Daniel Pennant (6:22.30) registered a close victory over Rohan Walker of Buff Bay High (6:22.47), with third going to Jeremy James of Kingston College in 6:52.42.

St Jago swept the top three spots in the Class Three 400 metres as Khieme Campbell won in 50.60 ahead of Ajani Williams (50.76) and Dafion Haughton (52.01).

Romario Jibbison captured the Class One 110m hurdles for St Jago in 14.07, while Marquese Page won the Class Two 110m hurdles for the Monk Street-based school in 13.67.

Jabari Matheson of William Knibb was best in the Class One 400m with a winning time of 47.43, as Kile Reid of St Elizabeth Technical High School ended second in 48.64, with third going to Chanton Whyte of Denbigh High in 48.85.

EDWIN ALLEN BUILD-UP

Edwin Allen continued their build-up for the ISSA Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships with another good all-round performance.

Tashana Godfrey led the way in the Class Three 80m hurdles. Godfrey, who fell in the event a year ago, was in blazing form on Saturday, winning in 11.16. The Holmwood Technical duo of Devonnie Francis (11.67) and Moya Thomas (11.79) ended second and third, respectively.

Port Antonio High's Shanica Harris surprised Edwin Allen's Kelly Ann Carr in the opening event of the day, the Open girls' 400m hurdles. In a close finish, Harris clocked 1:00.73 to edge out Carr, the defending ISSA Boys and Girls' champion in the event, who finished second in 1:00.75. Maria Crossfield of Edwin Allen was third in 1:03.74.

Edwin Allen had a clean sweep in the 4x100m relays, winning in all four classes. In Class One, they clocked 45.24, finishing ahead of Holmwood (45.76) and Vere (47.27).

They took Class Two in 46.20 ahead of Holmwood (46.49); won Class Three in 47.46 ahead of St Jago (48.17); and closed out Class Four in 48.08, finishing ahead of Holmwood (48.92).

There was also a good showing by St Jago's Bryanna Davidson in the Class One 100m hurdles, winning in 14.24. Amoi Kentish of Excelsior High was second in 14.46, with third going to Brianna Cross of Vere Technical in 14.98.
