Papine High, Knox capture all-island volleyball titles
Papine High School captured their first ever all-island volleyball title, while Knox College girls claimed their fourth straight win in the finals at G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport on Wednesday.
Papine High scored a 3-0 win over rural champions Oracabessa High, while Immaculate Conception High were a lot more competitive in their 3-0 loss to Knox.
Papine dominated the entire match and were barely pushed to their limits, to come away with a 25-20, 25-15, 25-22 win.
Coach Philando Thompson said after last year's defeat to Wolmer's Boys' in the urban final, they came back more purposeful this term.
"We have been training from the start of the season for this specific moment," said Thompson.
"Last year we went to the urban final and were knocked out by Wolmer's and everything from then was in preparation for this special moment.
"This is for the school, the boys, the whole school community," added Thompson.
Oracabessa High's coach Raheem Wallace said they were up against a better team.
"We had some hiccups over the weekend, but the boys didn't show up. Although reaching the final we exceeded expectations," he said.
INSPIRATIONAL
Meanwhile, Knox College, led by inspirational captain and MVP Treviann Taylor, won their fourth straight title.
Knox won the game 25-22, 25-22, 25-18.
Colin Rose, Knox's coach, highlighted Taylor's importance.
"Treviann has been with the team four, five years and 2023 when we won the first title Treviann was that player who won that title for us. She was our MVP in 2023 and she is our MVP today (Wednesday) again," he commented.
Taylor added that their success was achieved through hard work.
"Winning the title for four consecutive years is truly an amazing feeling. I cannot put into words how this means to me. This just goes to show that hard work pays off," she said.
Losing coach Nicholas Wilson said they were far from their best.
"We were high on confidence, but we didn't get the win because we didn't play to the best of our ability. Some players didn't show up. We didn't play as one and nerves got the better of some of them. I think it was just lack of experience, as for many of the girls it's their first time at this stage," he said.
