Weh Dem Up To: Alric & Boyd still making musical magic

Years ago, Alric and Boyd listeners either tuned into FAME FM or frequented the Corporate Area clubs like Mirage and The Quad, where the duo were billed as resident deejays for a while.

Even though much time has passed, Alric and Boyd are the epitome of sustaining careers as they continue to spin and produce music with success.

“We used to be resident deejays for Quad for about eight years,” Boyd said. (But) That mass appeal we had, it’s gone because the pipeline closed down.”

Additionally, their fans aged.

“I would say our audience that grew up listening to us, they have grown into life. Families, marriage - they don’t really party as much. And the younger people partying now, they don’t know about us. What has happened is a changing of the guard in some respects,” Boyd told THE WEEKEND STAR.

Remembered mostly for their turntable skills, it is easy to ignore that Alric and Boyd were also sensational music producers.

“We never really put our names out there. I mean, the names are there - but we never hyped up the names behind the songs, like what most other people do,” Boyd said.

The duo are the minds behind the 2005 El Toro! Rhythm - featuring songs like Liquor by Kiprich and Gash by Capleton.

Successful as it was, they realised that producing dancehall music wasn’t challenging for them.

International work

They eventually ventured to Philadelphia, where they produced Jill Scott’s album, The Light of the Sun.

“We produced it in 2007, and it came out in 2011. That album debuted on the Billboard Top 100 at number 29, and stayed there for awhile,” Boyd said.

The international work continues with the duo challenging their skills further to produce house music.

“We’ve been doing that for the last 12 or 13 years. We have a lot of songs on the dance music side. That’s what we’ve been doing,” said Boyd.

And they still spin too. Boyd holds down the Corporate Area - taking gigs at The Deck and private events; Alric is a resident deejay at Margaritaville MoBay.

Additionally, Boyd provides musical direction and consultation for Sandals Resorts.
