‘Truly beautiful’ - Female artistes supporting each other
" Gimmie A Light" singer Bella Blair says it is very important for women in entertainment to support each other.
"Females are usually placed in positions to compete with each other, so when females support each other, it's truly wonderful. It's almost as if there is a safe space that is created when female artistes support each other, and we need more of that in Jamaican music," she shared.
Bella Blair opened for Rosh Reign at the launch at her debut EP in January. The event, which was held at the Janga's Soundbar and Grill in New Kingston, also saw up-and-coming artiste Joby Jay lending support for Rosh Reign.
"It wasn't hard achieving the support of the female artistes at my EP launch. These are all ladies I have built a relationship with. I check for and respect them deeply," she told THE STAR.
The Right Time singer said that getting support from entertainers is always great in the Jamaican music space, but it's even more special when coming from another female.
"When a female artiste offers support to another it just oozes female empowerment. Too often we are set up against each other, so to have support in this regard is truly beautiful," Rosh Reign reasoned.
"It can be understood why one would think males are more supportive of each other in the creative space than females are of each other, but there are a whole bunch of females supporting one another. The space is a male-dominated one, so that could be one of the reasons it appears that way," Rosh Reign added.
Joby Jay, who has been gaining steady traction with singles like Cool Breeze and Big Girl Thing, explained that women supporting each other is comparable to a feeling of belonging in a community.
"It's very important to have community and feel seen ... and supported by your female peers. It's not a competition. We all have something unique and special to bring to the table. We can encourage each other, hold each other accountable, and share tips and advice," she said.
