As debates continue over the recent presentation of national honours and awards, one recipient, entertainer Wayne Marshall, who was inducted into the Order of Distinction Officer Class (OD), says his only focus is to "enjoy the moment with friends and family".

The Glory to God singer was among 126 persons who were honoured at last Monday's Ceremony of Investiture and Presentation of National Honours and Awards, and he couldn't be happier.

"I am feeling very grateful and honoured. I am overwhelmed by the love and outpouring of support I have been receiving. It is always good when you can be awarded and recognised for your contribution to your field and passion over decades," he said.

However, while Wayne Marshall is busy revelling in the honour, the online space has been abuzz with comments, some users claiming that the awards have bypassed others in the entertainment industry - like dancehall icons Beenie Man and Bounty Killer - and it was not yet Wayne Marshall's time to be honoured. But for the artiste, he's just enjoying the recognition.

"I would much prefer to not compare and just enjoy this moment with my friends, family and colleagues who know my personal journey and believe I'm totally deserving of this prestigious honour," he said.

"Bounty Killer and I have enjoyed a long history and friendship over the years. He also called me personally to congratulate me on this achievement," he added.

National awards and honours are determined by the Chancery of the Orders of the Societies of Honour, and the public is invited to nominate persons to be considered when nominations open in January and close at the end of March each year.

While expressing her joy over Wayne Marshall's OD, Professor Donna Hope encouraged persons who were disappointed in the selection to take that same energy and make their own nominations.

"I've been seeing this conversation online and everywhere, almost as if people are campaigning against Wayne Marshall. But my question is, who are they campaigning for? If you think someone else should have got the award, then nominate them," she said.

Irrespective of the debates, Wayne Marshall said he believes the award is a victory for dancehall as a genre.

"It simply means that no matter the genre, once you put in the effort, respect the craft, maintain integrity and character, then anything is possible," he said.

He joins the company of dancehall veterans Shabba Ranks, U-Roy and Yellowman, who have all been bestowed with ODs.
