It was hard to believe that entertainer Nigy Boy had never rehearsed with Salvation Army's School for the Blind and Visually Impaired Choir when he joined them to sing ' Who is Like the Lord' yesterday.

He also presented a cheque valued at $500,000 to the St Andrew-based school. Nigy Boy, a past student of the institution, said the donation was made possible through the Sagicor Foundation, following his participation in last month's Sigma Run.

"I was a patron in the Sigma Run, and Sagicor Foundation had asked me where I wanted to make a donation, and the first thought was here at the Salvation Army School for the Blind. I'm really happy I was able to make it happen here. As a former student, I always make it my mission to spread the name of the school wherever I go, because this was the institution that moulded me into the man that I am today. I always try to give back in whatever way I can," he shared.

The Continent Boss urged other organisations to follow suit in supporting educational institutions, regardless of the size of the donation.

"It doesn't have to be this institution, but learning facilities will forever be grateful, as no matter how small you may think a donation may be, it helps to shape the minds of a youngster. It was donations and the good offerings of good Samaritans that helped me become the person I am today as well," he said.

The high-flying entertainer said that contributions do not always have to be monetary. He stressed that "our children are the next leaders, and we just have to pave the way for them in one way or another".

Sherene Whyte, acting principal of the Salvation Army's School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, expressed immense gratitude not only for the donation, but for the success of her former student.

"I am feeling very good today, and it's not only because of the donation from Sagicor. But it is a great feeling having my former student Nigel here. I am so proud of him, and it's not only because he is successful, but because he remembers us. This is the reward that educators get out of teaching students, and Nigel will always be a role model to all of us," Whyte said.

Nigy Boy, whose given name is Nigel Hector, was declared blind at six months old. Aside from pursuing his musical dreams, he also earned a bachelor's degree in political science and history from the State University of New York in Long Island.
