George and Ruby Gibson: 38 years of marital bliss
Ruby and George Gibson of Dump district, Coleyville, Manchester, met, fell in love and got married on December 21, 1978.
The couple told THE STAR's 'Life and Times' they were in church together and knew each other well. George decided he wanted 'Miss Ruby' to be his mate for the rest of his life.
Ruby said he proposed to her and she did not take long to accept his offer, to take her as his lawfully wedded wife. They tied the knot just before Christmas of 1978.
When asked how it has been since they have been together, George shared that there has been ups and downs, but he and his mate have been able to build a successful marriage with the help of God.
"We have had rough times, rocky times and good times, but we have been able to cope, through the help of God. We have had rocky times, financially, and, sometimes, misunderstandings, between each other, but we are going on strong," he said.
As it relates to misunderstandings, Ruby said she and her husband have been able to address them by consulting God. She added that praying and asking the Lord for direction help a lot, because prayer changes things.
ACKNOWLEDGE GOD ALWAYS
George, a minister of religion, pointed out that for marriages to work, couples need to acknowledge the Lord in all their ways, and He will direct their path.
He said no couple is perfect, neither is there any perfect wedding, because persons are from different cultures and backgrounds.
The churchman said in a marriage, a man and his wife cannot both be fire. As sometimes one has to be the water to put out the fire.
"One has to learn to take a walk whenever conflicts or quarrels come about. If you don't do so the quarrel might never end," said George.
Ruby pointed out that persons planning to get married need to seek the Lord. She said when God is placed at the forefront of marriages, He will see them through and marriages will last. She added that, with God's grace and mercy, couples will make it on the marriage journey.
Asked if they should live their life over, if they would get married againg, the couple did not hesitate to answer in the affirmative. They want to celebrate many more wedding anniversaries together.
The union between Ruby and George Gibson has produced five children, all still alive.
