For some uncreative minds, a roll of thread and a needle may not spark an interest, but for 20-year-old Davia Guthrie, who enjoys working with her hands, this is an opportunity to create a masterpiece.

“Being able to use my hands is just how I express myself. It provides me with some form of comfort. That is why I enjoy doing crochet and physical therapy,” Guthrie told THE WEEKEND STAR.

Guthrie, who learned the skill of crocheting from her mother, said that she has been creating crochet designs such as swimsuits, tops, scarves and blankets since she was 11 years old.

“I used to watch my mother and aunt when they were doing designs and I always wanted to learn, so they taught me. As I got older I realised I loved it, and I was good at it because I couldn’t stop myself from doing it,” she added.

In 2018, she decided to transform her hobby into a business, after getting much compliments about work.

“As I got older, I realised that I was good at it, as a lot of my friends and family would ask me to make items for them, hence I turned it into a business,” Guthrie said. She has since started an online business, I Crush Designs, which she said is doing well.

“My pieces have been featured on fashion shows here in Jamaica, and I’ve received requests from overseas fashion shows as well. I do ship internationally because persons are requesting my designs,” she added.

Guthrie is pursuing a first degree in physical therapy at The University of the West Indies, Mona, and admits that balancing work and studies is sometimes difficult.

“For me, though, it is just about time management because school obviously comes first. I have to just try to align my timetable with everything that I do and completing orders.”
