Sewing machine operators wanted

Do you happen to be able to operate an industrial sewing machine so as to seamlessly join sections of fabric into factory-fitted finished products with a keen eye to detail? If so, this may be the job for you.

This week, THE STAR has yet again sought to make linkages between employers to employees in its Jobs to Go feature.

Following a search of The Gleaner Classifieds for job postings, our news team reached out to a Kingston-based manufacturing company who is now tasked with filling 'stitcher' vacancies. According to the ad, these personnel are needed to produce car seat covers, and must be well versed at cutting and using industrial straight stitch and Serger machines "with little or no supervision".

When THE STAR spoke with the 30-year-old operations manager employed to the company, who requested to remain unnamed, she shared additional details.

"We are a manufacturing company. We manufacture car seat covers and auto mats," she said. "We're expanding, so we want additional people. Right now, we only have capacity for about four more or so. We want them to sew and manufacture the covers. They must be able to operate an industrial straight stitch and Serger machine,"

By profession, the industrial sewing machine operator is typically someone who is versed in operating sewing machines in such a manner to join sections of fabrics to completion into finished products. Of course, it goes without saying that maintaining a strict and precise attention to detail and quality with an ability to work well in a fast-paced environment goes a long way in the field.

The operations manager further told THE STAR that she simply wants persons who are suitably skilled in the field with at least five years of experience operating an industrial sewing machine. Potential candidates are expected to be able to work well with others, and also able to make a great first impression after being short listed.

"They must have over five years worth of experience," she said. "They must be presentable. When they come in for an interview, they should be properly attired. I don't want anybody to come in here in slippers and so. When they see ads for stitchers, you have some people that are ridiculously dressed to come in. They should be professional. They must also be team players,"
